The Caribbean Film Corner was born of a love of the Caribbean and of film, and a desire to give filmmakers from the region a global platform. It features films from across the Caribbean, created in Spanish, French, English and Dutch speaking countries that encompass the archipelago from the Bahamas to Trinidad. A rich vein of talent, artists from the area have created diverse films that span every genre and take many perspectives. Expect to see absorbing documentary, fiction and animation in short and feature length form. With ‘The Harder they come‘ an iconic film about the Jamaican Foundation Music will be screened on sunday. The Berlin Soundsystem Collective presents another show with local soundsystems at YAAM. Behold & Live is a real handbuilt heavyweight sound and enters the arena with 4 x 18″ scoops for proper bassline while Roots Rockets brings his full set of 6 x 15″ scoops that plays quite heavy as we experienced at the Vintage Night some weeks ago. If you are into Roots & Dub from the 70s until today you shouldn’t miss this night.

Two promising movie trailers have been published recently. The first one is for Yardie, a fictional movie based on the same named novel by Victor Headley. It starts in Jamaica of the 70s and takes you to the UK in the 80s. Movie critic Jordan Hoffman from The Guardian wasn’t really convinced but others say it has potential of being another iconic movie about Jamaican Music as ‘The harder they come’ or ‘Rockers’ and this would be about time after all these years. It was screened at Berlinale earlier this year and we hope it will be shown at some open air cinema in town this summer. We’ll keep you posted if any dates are published.

Jamaican Ska, Rock Steady and Original Reggae

This month’s special guest is Boss Bread, one half of the Old Fashioned Rudeboys. His playout box is usually packed with a lot of Boss Reggae, lately you will also find some 70s tunes in his selection. He’ll have company by the hosts of this free night happening monthly for more than 10 years: Smart Soul, Rudewoi and The Rhythm Ruler.
